During the Mountain Gateway proposal, that influence led to billionaires holding the town hostage over land use decisions they disagreed with, blocking hundreds of affordable homes.
Shelter WF exists outside that pipeline. We are funded by community members like you — people who live and work here, not people who want to control what gets built. That independence means we can advocate for the housing policies Whitefish actually needs without fear of losing our funding.

Whitefish is growing, and with that growth comes a critical question: what kind of community do we want to be? Shelter WF believes in a Whitefish where everyone can find a place to call home. As a 501(c)(4) organization, we are at the forefront of the fight for abundant and affordable housing in our city and across Montana. Right now, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape our community's future. The city of Whitefish is currently updating its Growth Policy and zoning laws, a process mandated by the landmark legislation, SB 382, which we fought to pass in 2023. These updates will determine how and where Whitefish grows for decades to come. Will we embrace policies that lead to a wider range of housing options, or will we remain a community where only a few can afford to live?
Shelter WF has a proven track record of success. We've successfully advocated for pro-housing policies at the state legislature, and when those laws have been challenged, we've defended them all the way to the Montana Supreme Court and won. Our work has created new opportunities for housing across the state, and we are determined to continue that same success in our local community.
