Building a Brighter Housing Future
We recognize the growing need for diverse, accessible, and affordable housing options in Whitefish, particularly for our older adult population. Too often when people age, they have to move out of their neighborhoods, and sometimes even the town they have love, in order to live in more affordable and accessible housing as they age. We believe that Whitefish's neighborhoods should be adaptive and provide more housing types to allow residents to live in housing that is accessible and affordable, without having to leave the neighborhood/and or town they love. This competition aims to foster awareness and acceptance of different housing types such as Missing Middle Housing that offer affordability and community building opportunities.
The Shelter WF Design Challenge
In collaboration with other professionals in the field, we're forming a diverse judging committee to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of submissions. We're inviting architecture firms, design companies, and students across Montana to submit their innovative Missing Middle Housing designs.
Here's How it Works:
- The Challenge: Design Missing Middle Housing units that prioritize affordability, accessibility, and fostering a sense of community, especially for residents over 50.
- Submissions: Open to architecture firms, design companies, and students across Montana (Fill out this form if you are interested)
-
DELIVERABLES:
- Participants are required to upload one (1) A0 landscape oriented presentation board (with sketches, renderings, plans, sections, elevations, diagrams, and/or other presentation tools)
- Include a maximum 300 word summary of the design and its potential impact on the community. (Submissions for Option 01 can submit an additional 100-word summary of the zoning changes that would have the most positive impact on the project.)
- 30 second-1 minute explainer video showcasing the design, that will be shared on social media. (Optional)

- Cash Prizes: The top winner for each category, chosen by the panel of judges, will receive $2,500. The top winner for each category, voted on by the community, will receive $1,000 each.
What is Missing Middle Housing?
Missing Middle Housing is a type of residential building that falls in between detached single-family homes and large apartment buildings. It is considered to be a missing piece of the housing stock in the United States. There is a need for this type of housing because it is often moderately priced and caters to a wider range of ages including older adults. Some of the benefits of Missing Middle Housing include affordability, variety in housing options, and the ability for families to live close together. (Source: AARP - Missing Middle Housing)
Why Missing Middle Housing Matters
Our initiative is rooted in the belief that fostering community is crucial, especially for older adults who may experience isolation in detached single-family homes. We envision these Missing Middle units as a solution to promote community connection, mutual support, and affordability for all ages.
Aligning with Whitefish's Growth
The timing of this competition aligns perfectly with Whitefish's Growth Policy Update. This presents a strategic opportunity to champion zoning reforms that encourage affordable housing options, increased Missing Middle Housing, accessibility, and walkability. Ultimately, we aim to inspire residents and city officials to embrace a wider range of housing choices, enriching the fabric of Whitefish and allowing our older adults to age in place with dignity and security.
